February Luncheon - Mayor John Lee February 14th, 2014

As an Eagle Scout, Mayor Lee began his commitment to public service at a young age. His commitment to public service continued as he served on various commissions and boards and through elected office as a Nevada State Assemblyman, Nevada State Senator, and Mayor of North Las Vegas. John's private sector experiences as a business man provide a good foundation for leading. He was elected to the Nevada Assembly in 1996. Serving two terms as an Assemblyman, John was known as a champion of bipartisanship and for his commitment to common sense solutions to complex problems. In 2004, John was elected to the Nevada Senate where he served on the committees of Legislative Operations and Elections; Energy, Infrastructure, and Transportation; and was the Chairman of Government Affairs, where he was responsible for working with city and county government officials throughout Nevada. John was diagnosed with stage IV cancer in 2007. His determination to live was based on his understanding that every one of his accomplishments started with his decision to try. After months of agonizing treatment and with the help of others, John successfully won his battle with cancer. He now faces life with a new perspective, a greater sense of gratitude, and an increased desire to provide meaningful support to others. An avid outdoorsman, John proudly displays an "I Brake for Butterflies" bumper sticker on his GMC pickup, but as an experienced mountain biker, butterflies should probably stay off the trail! To signal the end to his fight with stage IV cancer, John completed a 10-day trek of the Tahoe Rim and returned to Carson City to continue fighting for Nevadans. John and his wife Marilyn have been married for 39 years and have seven children and eighteen grandchildren. They reside in North Las Vegas, Nevada and are active members in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints...

Hathaway, the Ted and Doris Lee Professor of Business, has published and presented extensively about entrepreneurship, leadership, business sustainability, ethics, and the economy. Prior to moving into academic leadership, Hathaway was vice president at Honeywell International; director of marketing at Case Corporation; and president, general manager at Concord, Inc., principal/director of Prism Consulting, a technology. Hathaway earned a Ph.D. in business administration from the University of Illinois, a master’s degree in agricultural economics from Purdue University and a bachelor’s degree in agricultural economics from Utah State University.

Matthew S. Holland is the President of Utah Valley University, where he has been serving since June of 2009. Before assuming his current position, President Holland was an associate professor of political science at Brigham Young University, where he taught courses in political philosophy and American political thought, including BYU’s large general education sections of American Heritage. A popular teacher, his commitment to applied learning concepts led to his selection as BYU’s “Civically Engaged Scholar of the Year” in 2008 by Utah Campus Compact. His scholarly research on how ideals of Christian charity influenced the development of American political life garnered national attention. In 2005, he won Princeton University’s James Madison Fellowship. In 2007, his book, Bonds of Affection: Civic Charity and the Making of America, was published by Georgetown University Press. He graduated from Brigham Young University with honors in 1991, and was valedictorian for the political science department. That same year he was awarded the Raoul Wallenberg Scholarship for a year of graduate study at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Before going on to earn his master’s degree and Ph.D. in political science at Duke University, President Holland served as chief of staff for the top executive of the international consulting firm Monitor Group and, later, as special assistant to then-Governor Michael O. Leavitt. He serves on numerous community boards, including the editorial advisory board of the Deseret News and the boards of the Utah Valley and Salt Lake City Chamber of Commerce. Thomas A. Thomas is the Managing Partner of the Thomas & Mack Co., an investment management and commercial real estate development company. Mr. Thomas has managed the company since its formation in 1992. After completing his legal studies in 1986, Thomas joined the Valley Bank of Nevada as Vice President and Legal Counsel. In 1988, Thomas was named Regional Vice President for retail banking operations. In 1990 he was named Senior Vice President over Private Banking and Corporate Trust Services. With the merger of Valley Bank of Nevada into Bank of America in 1992, Thomas left his banking career to formalize the real estate and wealth management operations of the Thomas & Mack Company. The real estate operations of the Company include the ownership and management of over 4 million sq. ft. of office and light industrial properties in Las Vegas as well as real estate developments in California, Arizona, and Utah. Thomas received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Finance from the University of Utah in 1982 and a Law Degree from the University of Utah College of Law in 1986. He is also a graduate of the National Graduate Trust School at Northwestern University. For over two decades Thomas has been intimately involved with numerous local charitable organizations. He has chaired the UNLV Presidents Associates, the Opportunity Village Foundation Board, the Board of Governors of the Utah Shakespeare Festival, and served as President of the Las Vegas Rotary Club. Jim Trevino is a serial Entrepreneur with over thirty years of experience starting, financing, building and selling companies. He took his first company public in 1984, a medical billing software company serving the physician, dental and hospital markets.
Jim also has extensive international business experience. From 1990-1992 he worked for, The Center for International Cooperation, a Seattle company whose mission was to facilitate international trade and cultural exchanges between Russia, China and the U.S. Two of his most notable achievements were leading a scholarly exchange between 300 U.S. constitutional lawyers and their Russian counterparts during the period of Glasnost and Perestroika under the presidency of Mikail Gorbachev. The other was conducting one of the largest business exchanges between the U.S. and China in Seattle Washington soon after the uprising in Tiananmen Square.
Jim is also an experienced financier whose company, Business Finance Corporation, has provided more than $750,000,000 in asset based financing to companies of all types and sizes.
Jim is also an informal venture capitalist. In 1999, he funded the eNic Corporation, the registry and registrar for the country code, .cc. Jim has also founded, financed and sold companies in industries as diverse as pipeline transportation and storage, mining, surveying, medical instrumentation, wholesale distribution, metal fabrication and fast food just to name a few.
Jim is currently a Founder, CEO and President of Dot Vegas Inc., the registry for the top level domain, .vegas. This endeavor has taken over seven years and cost more than 1.5 million dollars to bring to the marketplace.
Originally from Kalispell Montana, Jim has been a Las Vegas resident since 2000. He is a decorated war veteran having received the Bronze Star while serving as a scout with the 11th Armored Cavalry in Vietnam.

Scott Bulloch is a Founding Principal and the Chief Operating Officer of SPB Capital Partners, the first private equity fund based in Las Vegas, Nevada, with a second office in Santa Monica, California. Between 2004 and 2013, Scott and his partners developed processes for identifying, qualifying, performing due diligence, raising capital, financing and closing hundreds of millions of dollars in transactions. Some of those transactions include:
· Over $200 million in hospitality and gaming acquired from MGM and another seller in Laughlin NV and Pahrump NV; interest sold in 2008.
· Over $100 million of apartment units acquired and sold; over 1500 units.
· Acquisition of Nevada’s largest mechanical contractor.
· Acquisition of Hawaii’s second largest waste hauler.
· $50 million development of Wet ‘n’ Wild Waterpark in Las Vegas with Village Roadshow (Australia Stock Exchange: VRL) and The Howard Hughes Company.
Scott has been an accounting and finance professional for over 20 years, serving in roles at both Ernst & Young and Deloitte & Touche and in corporate positions (Huntsman and others). He has actively participated as part of management or as an advisor in the due diligence associated with various business transactions totaling over a billion dollars. In addition, as either a Chief Financial Officer or a Chief Operating Officer Scott has managed numerous aspects of business operations, including, tax planning, tax compliance, financial accounting, financial reporting, development and implementation of business processes, analysis of business lines, process improvements and other management issues. September Luncheon - Brian Burton, President and CEO of Three Square Food Bank September 12th, 2014
Brian Burton is a native of Little Rock, Ark., and holds a MBA degree from LSU and a Master of Divinity from Southern Seminary in Louisville, Ky.
Brian’s career began as a controller for Centex Homes, but quickly evolved into humanitarian work after serving as an associate pastor at a Baptist church in Dallas, Texas. He then served for 14 years as Executive Director at the Wilkinson Center, a faith-based nonprofit organization lifting people out of poverty through education and emergency services.
Brian relocated from Dallas to Las Vegas in April of 2011 to become President and CEO of the Three Square Food Bank. Only six years old, Three Square has developed into the fastest growing food bank in the nation. When the former food bank closed in 2006, the Las Vegas community rallied and, led by founder Eric Hilton and the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, a new food bank was formed called Three Square.
In 2013, Three Square distributed more than 30 million pounds of food and grocery product, the equivalent to more than 25 million meals. Three Square works with nearly 1,300 partner sites including nonprofit and faith-based organizations, schools and feeding sites. Through these program partners, Three Square serves more than 100,000 individuals monthly. Among programs run through these sites is the BackPack for Kids, which serves approximately 275 schools with more than 5,000 children receiving supplemental weekend meals each week. In the 2012-2013 school year, more than 175,000 bags were distributed. In addition, Three Square’s Kids Cafe® after-school program currently serves more than 90 after school programs and provides more than 24,000 meals per week.

January Luncheon - Patrice Tew January 9th, 2015
As a young girl Trustee Patrice Tew lived with her family in Iran under the regime of the Shah Mohammad Reza Palavi. That international experience cultivated within her a great love and a respect for diverse peoples and cultures along with a profound gratitude for family and country. She has a yearning for knowledge and characterizes herself as a perennial student who lives in a constant state of grateful wonderment. She graduated Valedictorian of her college, High Honors with Distinction from Brigham Young University. Fulfilling a dream of learning to fly she was awarded the Link Foundation Scholarship thereby earning her private pilot’s license. She received her Juris Doctorate from J. Ruben Clark Law School and practiced law part time three years in Minnesota where she was admitted to the bar. She has been married to Wayne Tew, President of Clark County Credit Union, for 35 years.
She and her family have lived in Las Vegas for 29 years where they raised their four children, one daughter and three sons--all of whom graduated from Clark County School District Schools. Patrice is passionate about children and education and raising life-long learners. The spirit of volunteerism runs strong in Patrice who volunteered for two decades serving in her children’s classrooms, in PTA leadership; as a leader in the Boy Scouts of America for 17 years; and as a member, and later as chair, of the Clark County School District Sex Education Advisory Committee to the School Board for nine years.
On an international level she served as a delegate for the World Congress on Families in Geneva, Switzerland and then again as a delegate in Warsaw, Poland. She has lobbied at the United Nations advocating for the rights of children, women, and families at the 1999 Convention on the Rights of the Child and at the 2011 Commission on the Status of Women. She was honored in 2010 as the Nevada Mother of the Year. In 2012 she was elected to a four year term to serve as a Clark County School District Board of School Trustee for District E. About Allan Palmer
After serving as a commissioned officer and pilot in the US Air Force and Navy, Commander Palmer has held senior management positions with several non-profit corporations in Hawaii, including the Queen Emma Foundation, Queens Medical Center, Hawaii Kai Computers, Inc., Aeronautical Radio Inc., and the Hawaii Army Museum Society. As the Executive Director of the San Diego Air and Space Museum, he managed one of the top five aviation and space museums in the country. During his tenure, the museum completed an ambitious $5 million capital campaign and construction of three major additions. He served as the founding Executive Director and CEO of the Pacific Aviation Museum – Pearl Harbor, a new $14 million aviation museum that he opened in 2006 on Pearl Harbor’s historic Ford Island. He has served as a consultant to museums, government and non-profit organizations for the design and construction of new museums. He is currently the Executive Director and CEO of the Nevada Test Site Historical Foundation and the National Atomic Testing Museum, a Smithsonian Affiliate museum located in Las Vegas, Nevada. He is the Chairman of the Las Vegas Museum Alliance, a professional organization of southern Nevada museum directors/CEOs. At our March luncheon we'll be pleased to hear from BYU professor Dean Busby, Director of the School of Family Life. His luncheon presentation will be on "The Power of the Marriage Vow to Transform our Lives In and Outside of our Homes."
Dean Busby received his PhD from BYU in 1990 and he's been a professor at Syracuse University, Texas Tech University, and BYU ever since. In 2012 he was made the Director of the School of Family Life.
Special Evening Fireside
Along with the BYU Management Society Luncheon, Dean Busby will be doing A Date Night Fireside at 7:00 PM at the Spring Mountain Stake (6601 W. Twain Ave). Ages 16 and older are invited and church dress is requested at the Fireside. Refreshments will be served. The evening Fireside is sponsored by the Las Vegas BYU Alumni.
April Luncheon - Cortney S. Warren, Ph.D, Author April 10th, 2015
Dr. Cortney S. Warren is an Associate Adjunct Professor of Psychology at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) and an Adjunct Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Nevada School of Medicine. After earning her bachelor’s degree at Macalester College in 2000, Cortney received her Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Texas A&M University in 2006 after completing her clinical internship at McLean Hospital/Harvard Medical School.
Raised traveling the world, Cortney has a unique perspective on how culture influences eating norms, food rituals, and ideals of beauty. As such, the majority of Cortney's research explores eating pathology, addictions, self-deception, and the practice of psychotherapy from a cross-cultural perspective. With more than 35 peer reviewed journal articles, 7 book chapters, and one book, Cortney’s work appears in some the field's top journals, including the International Journal of Eating Disorders, Appetite, and Obesity. Cortney has won some of the most prestigious awards in her field, including the 2011 Theodore H. Blau Early Career Award for Distinguished Professional Contributions to Clinical Psychology (awarded jointly by the American Psychological Foundation and the American Psychological Association) and the 2010 Samuel M. Turner Early Career Award for Distinguished Contributions to Diversity in Clinical Psychology (from the American Psychological Association).
Although Cortney received tenure from UNLV in 2012, she formally retired from academia in 2014 to pursue a career that would allow her more time with her family and more interaction with the general public. In a recent TEDx talk called Honest Liars: The Psychology of Self-Deception (http://youtu.be/YpEeSa6zBTE), Cortney described her decision to retire from academia and her view that self-deception is our biggest obstacle to life fulfillment. In addition to her recent TEDx talk, Cortney interacts with various media sources including writing a blog for Psychology Today and serving as a guest commentator for FOX5 Las Vegas.

On November 2, 2010, Joe Heck was elected to the United States Congress as Nevada’s Representative for the Third Congressional District. Heck is only the third person to hold this seat since its creation. He serves on the Education and Work and the Armed Services Committee. He is also the only freshman appointed to serve on the House Permanent Committee on Intelligence.
Dr. Heck has more than 30 years in public service as a physician, Army Reservist, and community volunteer. Previously, Heck served as a volunteer firefighter and ambulance attendant, Search & Rescue team member, and SWAT physician. A Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves, he was called to active duty three times, including a deployment to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
As a small business owner, he served as the President and Medical Director of Specialized Medical Operations, Inc., a corporation dedicated to providing quality medical training, consulting, and operational support to Law Enforcement, EMS and Military Special Operations. Dr. Heck has lectured and published widely on special operations medical support, the medical response to acts of terrorism, and emergency preparedness and response.
Dr. Heck represented Nevada State Senate District 5 from 2004 through 2008, serving on the Natural Resources, Human Resources and Education, and the Commerce and Labor Committees, and as Vice-Chair of the Transportation and Homeland Security Committee.
Born in New York and raised in Pennsylvania, Joe moved to Southern Nevada in 1992. A 1984 graduate of The Pennsylvania State University with a degree in Health Education, he received his medical degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1988, and completed a residency in Emergency Medicine at the Albert Einstein Medical Center in 1992. In July 2006 he graduated from the U.S. Army War College, earning a Masters of Strategic Studies.
Joe is a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 13456, American Legion Paradise Post 149, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 36 and Catholic War Veterans Post 1947. He enjoys reading and playing/coaching lacrosse.

The Nevada Press Association in 2009 rated his column the best in the state for its largest newspapers and best for community papers in 2012 and 2014. His columns appear in eight Nevada newspapers. He has won numerous other awards over the years.

August Luncheon - Dave Rice, UNLV Head Basketball Coach August 14th, 2015
Dave Rice is in his fourth season as the head men's basketball coach at UNLV.
On April 10, 2011, Rice returned to the school where he was part of the 1990 National Championship team as a player, was a Rhodes Scholar candidate while earning his bachelor's degree in political science (UNLV '91), earned his master's of business administration (UNLV '93) and served as a Runnin' Rebel assistant coach for 11 seasons (1991-92 & 1994-2004).
Prior to accepting his first head coaching job, Rice accumulated 18 years of experience as an assistant coach at the Division-I level.
Rice joined Dave Rose's BYU staff in 2005 as an assistant coach, then was promoted to associate head coach in 2008. He helped BYU to five straight 25-win seasons and five consecutive NCAA Tournament berths, including a Sweet 16 appearance in 2011. BYU finished that season as the nation's 10th-ranked team, won the MW regular-season championship and finished with an overall record of 32-5. The Cougars, led by National Player of the Year Jimmer Fredette, climbed as high as No. 3 in the polls, which is the highest a MW team has ever been ranked.
Rice also spent a year (2004-05) as assistant coach at Utah State under Coach Stew Morrill after his long tenure as assistant at UNLV.
Dave and his wife, Mindy, who is also a UNLV graduate, have two sons, Travis, 17, and Dylan, 12.
The couple established the Dave Rice Foundation in the spring of 2012, which is a non-profit organization dedicated to the education and support of health initiatives including developmental disorders such as Autism, and other charitable causes.
Since its inception, it has awarded over $500,000 in grants to various Autism-related organizations in Southern Nevada. Being the son of an Air Force Officer, we had the opportunity to travel and live throughout the world. After attending college in Riverside, California, I relocated to the Bay Area and pursued a professional golfing career. Six years of near starvation helped me realize that I needed to make a career change so I became employed with an electronics firm that made add-on memory for IBM main frame computer systems. After two years, some company developed desktop computers with a little fruit logo that looked like an apple. After that, 1,300 of us needed to find new employment.
At the same time, my grandfather, who owned Vegas Rock and Sand, was incredibly busy and asked that I come to Las Vegas to help him. I was eager to return to Las Vegas, being the son of a Native Nevadan. In 1987, after the deaths of my grandfather and father, I sold the company to Las Vegas Paving and had eight years of wonderful employment with the Mendenhall Family. Realizing that I wanted to do more for my family, I went about getting my life and health insurance licenses and was very successful at selling health insurance to individuals in small businesses for six years. I learned about the PEO industry from an individual who was starting his own PEO here in Las Vegas and took that company from five clients to $85 million dollars in revenue in just five years. Due to a conflict in integrity and character, we parted ways and I was contacted by our good friend, Paul Workman. I was then introduced to Phil Richards, the Co-Founder of AdvanStaff HR. We had three days of interviews and for the first time in my life, I was thrilled to say that I found a home. I appreciate working with people every day that do all the right things, for all the right reasons, even when nobody is looking.

Elder Keith R. Edwards was sustained a member of the Second Quorum of the Seventy of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on April 1, 2006. He was serving as an Area Seventy in the North America Southwest Area at the time of his call as a General Authority.
Elder Edwards attended the Church College of Hawaii and completed his undergraduate studies in political science at Brigham Young University. He earned a law degree from the University of Utah and practiced law in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Elder Edwards previously served the Church as a full-time missionary in the Florida Mission, as president of the Zimbabwe Harare Mission (2000-2003), area welfare director, stake president, counselor in a stake presidency, assistant temple recorder, seminary teacher, bishop, and counselor in a bishopric.
Keith Reid Edwards was born in Las Vegas, Nevada, on March 16, 1942. He married Judith Lee Higgins in 1964. Keith is currently an emeritus general authority and sealer in the Jordan River Temple. He and his wife returned from serving as the president of the England MTC in January, 2015. Currently they have 36 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren...

Our speaker, Linda Fogg Phillips, will present the Tiny Habits method that over 28,000 people have learned and implemented to develop new habits and change their behavior without relying on willpower. The Tiny Habits method is effective for any kind of behavior change that you want to do including losing weight, being more productive to reducing stress.
Only three things will change behavior in the long term.
Creating an epiphany is difficult. You should rule out Option A unless you have mystical power.
But here’s the good news: The other two options are practical. And they can lead to lasting change if you follow the right program. This is what Tiny Habits is based on.
In a 35 - 45 minute Tiny Habits session you will learn how to design effective Tiny Habits recipes and implement them into your life with minimal effort and time. You will learn what makes a good anchor for your Tiny Habits. You will learn how “tiny” a Tiny Habit needs to be and how to pair it with the right anchor for success. You will also learn the importance of celebrating your Tiny Habits, how to find your natural celebration, and the impact that celebration has on making sustainable behavior change.
I will share our research that supports the most impactful result of the Tiny Habits method (hint: it’s not what you think, but it is what makes this program so successful) and how we measure that week to week with in our online Tiny Habits program. January Luncheon - Lieutenant Governor Mark Hutchison January 8th, 2016
A third generation Nevadan, born and raised in Las Vegas, Lieutenant Governor Mark Hutchison is a husband, father and grandfather, constitutional lawyer, and business owner. He has a strong sense of commitment and dedication to Nevada and is deeply honored to represent the Silver State.
Mark was raised in a modest blue-collar family and is the product of Nevada’s public education system. After he graduated from Bonanza High School Mark earned his business administration degree, Phi Kappa Phi, from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and received his law degree, magna cum laude, from Brigham Young University. Following law school Mark clerked for a judge on the U.S. Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals in Indiana. Mark then worked for a national law firm until returning to Nevada and founding his own law firm in 1996 with his good friend, John Steffen. Today, Mark is the senior partner at Hutchison & Steffen, one of the largest law firms in the state, employing nearly one hundred Nevadans. Mark has been widely recognized by his peers and clients as a skilled an effective lawyer. As a result, Mark has been a key figure in some of Nevada’s most significant governmental disputes at the intersection of law and politics.
On November 4, 2014, Mark Hutchison was elected to serve as Nevada’s 34th Lieutenant Governor. Prior to running for lieutenant governor, Mark had a long history of public service. Mark served on the Nevada Commission on Ethics for six years, two of which he chaired the commission. Mark also had the pleasure of serving in the Nevada State Senate (Senate District 6) to which he was elected in 2012. In addition to his service in the public sector Mark served as a member of numerous non-profit and community organizations, some of which he is still active in today.
Mark was sworn in to office on January 5, 2015. As Lieutenant Governor, Mark is a member of Governor Brian Sandoval’s cabinet and serves as President of the State Senate. Mark is the Chairman of the Commission on Tourism, Vice-Chairman of the State Board of Transportation, a member of the Board of the Governor’s Office of Economic Development, and a member of the Executive Budget Audit Committee. On November 17, 2015 Mark was appointed to the Governor’s Commission on Homeland Security. Mark also serves as a member of the Board of Directors for the Public Education Foundation and as Co-Chair of What’s Next Nevada?.
When not focused on his duties as Lieutenant Governor or at his law firm, Mark is focused on his family. Mark and his wife Cary have been married for thirty years and together they have six children and four grandchildren. February Luncheon - Wayne Tew, Former CEO of Clark County Credit Union February 12th, 2016
Wayne Tew has served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Clark County Credit Union (CCCU) from 1986 until August 2015, having retired from the office. With his background in accounting and dedication to providing members with a top quality financial institution, Tew helped transform CCCU into one of the strongest credit unions in Nevada.
When Tew joined CCCU in 1986, the credit union had 14,000 members and assets of $38 million, with severe delinquency and negative earnings. Since then, the credit union has grown to include 30,000 members and $500 million in assets.
Tew has been heavily involved in the credit union industry, having served as Chairman of the Nevada Credit Union League Board, and previously as Chairman of the Client Group Board for SUMMIT Information Systems, a FiServ company that provides data processing software to credit unions. Tew also served on the Advisory Board for American Share Insurance, the largest private deposit insurance company in the country.
Wayne stays heavily involved in the community. He is an active member of the Vegas Valley Angels and serves on the board of Dimicron, a start-up company utilizing synthetic diamond in medical devices.
He served ten years as a stake president with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and serves on the Executive Board of the Las Vegas Council in the Boy Scouts of America. He is also a director for The Howard Center, a think tank focusing on issues involving the natural family.
Tew earned his Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in Accounting from Brigham Young University and is a Certified Public Accountant. Prior to joining CCCU, He served as Vice President and Controller for City-County Credit Union in Minneapolis, Controller for Minnesota Online, and Auditor for Arthur Andersen & Company in Minneapolis.

Dean Busby received his PhD from BYU in 1990 and he's been a professor at Syracuse University, Texas Tech University, and BYU ever since. In 2012 he was made the Director of the School of Family Life.

April Luncheon - Dr. Victor L. Ludlow, Emeritus BYU Professor of Ancient Scripture and Near Eastern Studies April 8th, 2016
Dr. Victor L. Ludlow is well-known at BYU as a scholar on Isaiah and Judaism. He graduated with high honors from BYU and was a Danforth Fellow at Harvard and Brandeis Universities in the Boston area where he received a Ph.D. in Near Eastern and Judaic Studies. He began teaching at Brigham Young University in 1972, where he now is a retired Emeritus Professor of Ancient Scripture and Near Eastern Studies. Professor Ludlow developed and taught a variety of classes at BYU, with an emphasis on the Bible (especially the writings of Isaiah), the Book of Mormon, and Judaism.
Dr. Ludlow’s scholarship explores the areas of Bible studies, the Middle East, Jewish history and theology, and comparative Latter-day Saint theology. He has authored numerous articles (including some in the Encyclopedia of Mormonism and the Book of Mormon Reference Companion) and the books: Unlocking the Old Testament; Isaiah: Prophet, Seer, and Poet; Principles and Practices of the Restored Gospel; and Unlocking Isaiah in the Book of Mormon. He has also prepared audio library lectures on covenants, the writings of Isaiah, the Middle East, the Bible, and, more recently, Latter-day Insights: The Middle East.
His extensive travels throughout the Middle East, Europe, and Asia have deeply enriched his appreciation for other cultures and have strengthened his understanding and scholarship about how the restored gospel of Jesus Christ is expanding into many different countries of the world.
He and his wife, V-Ann (Virginia Ann), have enjoyed golfing, bowling, camping, jogging/hiking/walking, and traveling in the Middle East (which he has visited over fifty times). They are the parents of four sons and two daughters, who filled their home with love & laundry, friends and fun, and a host of enriching experiences. May Luncheon - Mauri Earl, International Affairs Representative for the LDS Church in DC May 13th, 2016
Mauri Earl joined the Washington, D.C. Office of Public and International Affairs for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in May 1999. In her current capacity as International Affairs Representative, Mauri coordinates diplomatic outreach with the embassies of Asia-Pacific, Africa, and the Middle East. Previously, she served as Staff Assistant to the Director.
In December 2015, Mauri was event chair for the 38th Annual Festival of Lights Lighting Ceremonies illuminating 650,000 lights at the Church’s Washington D.C. Temple where over 65 embassies were represented. She is a member of the Cultural Arts Committee at the Temple Visitors’ Center and is a member of Protocol Diplomacy International - Protocol Officers Association.
Originally from Reno, Nevada, Mauri graduated from Brigham Young University (BYU) in Provo, Utah. During college, Mauri studied at BYU’s Center for Near Eastern Studies based in Jerusalem, Israel. Naomi Watkins is a women's advocate, educational leader, and community builder. Naomi cofounded Aspiring Mormon Women, a 501c3 nonprofit organization that supports and encourages Latter-day Saint women's professional and educational pursuits. Aspiring Mormon Women was born from her experiences pursuing higher education as a Mormon woman and her belief that when provided examples, models, connection, and support, women find empowerment to pursue their personal goals. The organization provides capacity building, networking, and mentoring on an international scale through online content and in-person events to LDS women who are high school age, who are in school, who are working, or who are desiring to return to school or the workforce. Many women report that their involvement with Aspiring Mormon Women has been the catalyst to seeking out and making changes in their educational and professional lives. A native of Southern California, Naomi earned her B.A. in English Education from Brigham Young University, a M.Ed. in Language and Literacy from Arizona State University, and a Ph.D. in Teaching and Learning with a literacy emphasis from the University of Utah.

I was born in New York but moved to Massachusetts when I was 6 years old. After graduating high school in Massachusetts I attended BYU for the 1989-1990 school year. After my freshman year at college I served my mission in Rome, Italy, from 1990 to 1992. When I returned from my mission I finished my undergraduate degree at BYU with a major in history in 1995. I worked in Salt Lake City for a year while my wife finished her degree at BYU. I started law school at the J. Rueben Clark Law School at BYU in 1996. After graduating from law school I started working for the Clark County District Attorney’s Office in the summer of 1999 as a law clerk. I was promoted to a Deputy District Attorney in the summer of 2000. I am currently assigned to the office’s Major Violators Unit. During my time in the office I have prosecuted a wide variety of cases but the emphasis has been on murder cases. I have handled approximately 66 jury trials, 36 of which were homicides, including capital murder cases. My wife and I have been married for 22 years and we have 5 children...

Dr. Michael Richards is the president and CEO of the College of Southern Nevada. He joined CSN in July 2005 as Vice President for Academic Affairs, became interim president in 2007 and permanent president in May 2008, following a national search. Prior to arriving at CSN, he was associate provost and associate professor of management at Southern Utah University where he served in various executive positions for 23 years.|
A Utah native, Dr. Richards received his bachelor's and master's degrees in English from Weber State University and Utah State University, respectively, and his doctorate in higher education administration from the University of Denver.
Since arriving at CSN, Dr. Richards has enhanced the college's partnerships, working closely with regional business and industry, other institutions of higher education, and the Clark County School District. He champions the community college high school program, which has a 100 percent high school graduation rate and gives high school students an opportunity to earn up to an associate degree at CSN’s three campuses.
He has worked to promote CSN among Southern Nevada’s many diverse communities to reduce achievement gaps and disparities as well as increase scholarships and financial aid for low-income students. Under his tenure, CSN has become a Minority Serving Institution and the first Hispanic Serving Institution in Nevada.
Dr. Richards is working to increase degree and certificate completion and transfer rates for all students, recognizing these educational outcomes as among the many metrics that demonstrate student success. He also has enhanced CSN's Division of Workforce and Economic Development and its partnerships with state agencies and local industries to create an educated workforce for the 21st Century.
His professional associations include the American Association of Community Colleges and the recent Nevada Legislature's interim committee on the funding of higher education. Dr. Richards is active in the community, serving on the regional economic development steering committee and as a member of the Las Vegas Metro Chamber of Commerce.
Dr. Richards and his wife, Jan, have been married for more than 40 years, and they have five daughters and seven grandchildren. Dr. Richards enjoys reading, golf -- at least once a year -- and spending time with his family...

BG Hall is a well-known personality in So. NV having served as Administrative Assistant to Senator Paul Laxalt and later as City Manager for the City of Las Vegas from 1981 to 1990. He subsequently worked in the insurance and consulting industries and as a Court Appointed Receiver and Special Master with custodial duties in the Business Courts of So. NV.
BG Hall has served for more than 35 years in the Army National Guard as a chaplain. He retired from military service in 2000 and was appointed as an Ambassador for the U.S. Army Reserve in 2009. According to the Review Journal, “He has keen understanding of the sacrifices made by citizen-soldiers and their families.”
“Ambassadors volunteer their time and services to support Army Reserve soldiers and their families by encouraging community support, legislative efforts and employer support. They meet with federal, state and local government officials, provide community outreach assistance to Army Reserve members and families and participate in Yellow Ribbon Programs designed to help soldiers and families meet the needs and challenges with deployment, reunions and employment/educational opportunities. About Mary Beth Scow
Mary Beth Scow has been a Clark County resident for 40 years. She was born and raised in Denver, Colorado. While in high school, she was an exchange student to the Netherlands and was an honors graduate. She attended Brigham Young University, graduating Cum Laude with a Bachelor's Degree in Community Health Education. After moving to Las Vegas in 1977 with her husband, Steven, and their children, she was active in raising her children, church service and in many capacities in the community. Her community work included serving on numerous political campaigns, several school district committees, zoning task forces and the Parent Teacher Association, including president of the Sunset Area Council PTA and Nevada State Board of Managers. She was chosen as Nevada Mother of the Year in 2009.
In 1996 Mary Beth was asked to run for the Clark County School Board, which she did, and was elected to three terms, serving from 1996 to 2008. She served as President, Vice President and Clerk of the Board during that tenure, as well as on the State Mathematics Standards Writing Team, Clark County Debt Management Commission, Southern Nevada Regional Planning Coalition, and Nevada Association of School Boards Board of Directors. At the end of her tenure she received the CCSD Excellence in Education Hall of Fame award. Education remains one of her great passions.
Mary Beth was elected to represent the residents of District G on the County Commission in 2010 and was re-elected in 2014. District G is one of the County's most diverse, taking in the communities of Boulder City, and much of Henderson and unincorporated Clark County. As a Commissioner, Mary Beth worked hard to revitalize neighborhoods and restore community pride in the unincorporated areas. During that tenure she also has served as Chair of the Southern Nevada Water Authority, Chair of the Las Vegas Valley Water District, Chair of the Clark County Health District, a member of the AB 394 Technical Advisory Committee to Reorganize the Clark County School District, and a member of the Family Services and Juvenile Justice Policy Committee. Mary Beth recently resigned her position on the County Commission in order to spend more time with family. She will continue to serve on the Las Vegas Boy Scout Council Board of Directors, Clark County School District Partnership Advisory Committee and the Public Education Foundation Board of Directors.

From Banking to Food Banking, Three Square Food Bank's Chief Operating Officer Larry Scott has experienced the challenges of executive leadership of both a For-Profit corporation and a Nonprofit organization. On July 13th, he'll share some insights about their differences and elaborate on how supply chain is a key component of addressing hunger need.
Larry Scott assumed the role of Chief Operating Officer of Three Square Food Bank in April 2017 after serving as Chief Financial Officer, managing the company’s multi-million budget. Scott is directly responsible for expanding Three Square’s mission of providing wholesome food to hungry people throughout Southern Nevada, increasing the organization’s food procurement and warehousing, as well as assuring the quality of food distributed to agency partners. Scott’s presence at Three Square has significantly elevated workplace culture, as he has been instrumental in the promotion of a positive and productive work environment. Prior to joining Three Square, Scott spent 31 years in the banking industry where he held management and executive positions. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing from Utah State University and a Master of Business Administration from National University. "The Nevada Supreme Court: What We've Accomplished" with Associate Chief Justice Michael Cherry August 10th, 2018
Associate Chief Justice Michael A. Cherry has been an attorney in Nevada since 1970 and was elected to the Supreme Court in 2006. He ran unopposed for a second 6-year term in November of 2012, when he served as Chief Justice for the Nevada Supreme Court. Associate Chief Justice Cherry chairs the Indigent Defense Commission that examines how the justice system deals with criminal defendants who cannot hire their own attorneys. He also chairs the Right to Counsel Legislative Commission and is the supervising justice over the Senior Justice and Judge Program.
He began his career as a Deputy Clark County Public Defender before becoming a partner in the law firms of Manos & Cherry and later Cherry, Bailus & Kelesis. In 1981 Associate Chief Justice Cherry was named as Special Master of the MGM Grand Hotel Fire Litigation and in 1983 he assumed the duties of Special Master of the Las Vegas Hilton Fire Litigation. As Special Master, Judge Cherry served as liaison between plaintiffs’ attorneys, defense attorneys and the court during these multi-million dollar cases. His work as Special Master gained him nationwide recognition and the procedures he established are now a part of most mass disaster litigation.
Associate Chief Justice Cherry served as an Alternate Municipal Judge for the cities of Las Vegas and Henderson, as well as Justice of the Peace Pro Tem and Small Claims Referee for Clark County. In 1994 he became an instructor for the University of Phoenix, teaching business law and history.
In 1997, Associate Chief Justice Cherry was appointed to lead the newly created Clark County Special Public Defender’s Office, which handled major homicide and conflict cases from the public defender’s office. He served in that capacity until being elected to Department 17 of the Eighth Judicial District Court in 1998.
Associate Chief Justice Cherry earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Missouri and a juris doctorate degree from Washington University School of Law.
